The annual observance of Philippine Independence Day was signed into law by former President Diosdado Macapagal via Republic Act No. 4166 on August 4, 1964. According to Philippine records, the announcement of Independence was hung on June 12, 1898, using General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization.
The Philippines flag was raised, and its countrywide anthem became a play for the first time in 1898. “It is, however, fitting to memorialize through the issuance of a commemorative stamp, these historical landmarks that represent the blood and sacrifices earned with the aid of our martyrs, so as for our next era to cherish and consider,” Postmaster General Joel Starr said.
The Independence Day stamps feature vibrant blue and pink designs, signifying the Philippine Flag’s shade with the close-up photographs of the four brilliant and ancient monuments in Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, and Caloocan City.
